How to Choose an Affiliate Network: Test the Work Before You Buy

· Industry Guide · by Evan Weber

Choose an affiliate network by testing a referral journey and a recruiting task. Check integration, reversals, access, costs and responsibilities.

Choose an affiliate network or tracking platform by testing the work your program needs to do. A large directory, a familiar logo or an attractive demo does not establish that your product integration, publisher relationships and reporting will work as required.

Bring one order journey and one recruiting task to each provider conversation. Ask to see both completed.

Build a demo around an actual decision

Here is a fictional requirement: a U.S. home-office brand sells adjustable lamps, wants relevant review publishers and needs to distinguish approved orders from returns. The team already has five possible publisher properties. It wants to know whether the provider can support the store, contract terms, links, reporting and payment process.

During a demonstration, follow one permitted test referral through the supported testing process. Identify the partner, intended product page, recorded event, pending status and reversal workflow. Ask which parts depend on the store integration or another service. Do not place a real paid order just to make a demo feel realistic.

Separately, ask how the team can research or invite suitable publishers, and what access is included in the proposed account. A tracking demonstration does not prove recruitment access. A directory demonstration does not prove that your checkout integration records the correct commission base.

Use the provider's current documentation

CJ describes its Recruit Partners tool for advertiser discovery. Check the current account experience and available information with CJ.

impact.com describes Discover & Recruit and its partner marketplace. Ask which discovery and workflow capabilities are included in your proposed setup.

Awin documents Opportunity Marketplace for additional promotional placements. A listed opportunity still needs a commercial and editorial review.

Everflow documents marketplace partner connections. Evaluate that option alongside its tracking and partner-management setup rather than assuming it has no marketplace.

These links establish where to investigate. They are not a ranking or a claim that every provider offers identical access, fees or functionality.

Compare costs and responsibilities together

Request a current written quote. Separate setup, recurring charges, transaction-based fees, payment costs and any optional services. Ask how reversals affect charges and whether minimum commitments apply.

Record who handles technical integration, account funding, publisher approvals, tax or payment information, support and data exports. A small team should know which responsibilities it is accepting before choosing a platform.

Make the decision from the test

For the lamp brand, a useful decision record might read: “The supported test records the expected referral, but we still need confirmation of return handling and the store connector's support owner. Hold the purchase until those answers are documented.” That is more useful than selecting a universal winner.

Keep recruiting research separate from platform selection. AffiliateFinders supports publisher discovery and contact research; it does not replace your tracking provider. Disclosure: Evan Weber founded AffiliateFinders, PublisherFinders and Experience Advertising.
